Detailer Advisor: The Customer You Should Have Fired
The most expensive lesson in detailing isn't equipment. It's the customer you should've fired.
A fellow detailer shared this week that after 14 combined hours on a customer's truck, the owner turned one fixable complaint â streaky windows â into 30+ insulting texts, threats of bad reviews, and "I'll pay whatever I think it's worth." She offered to come back and fix it. He wasn't looking for a fix. He was looking for a discount with an audience.
If that's ever been you, here's the armor:
-
No deposit, no appointment â and mean it. This owner normally requires a deposit but waived it this time. That's exactly when the worst ones get in. The policy that protects you is the one with zero exceptions.
-
Paper before polish. A one-page agreement with the scope, price, payment terms, and cancellation policy, signed before you touch the car. Texts and memory are not agreements. Two minutes of paperwork is what separates you from a 30-message dispute.
-
Get paid at handoff. Full balance before the keys change hands. Once they drive away, your leverage drives away too. A card on file at booking makes this painless.
-
Offer the fix once, in writing, with a deadline. "I'll come back Tuesday and redo the windows â is 10 AM good?" If they say no and start throwing insults, they're not a customer anymore, they're a negotiator. Stop negotiating.
-
Never trade discounts for reviews. Review extortion violates the policies of every review platform â and once you discount for one threat, every bad actor learns your price. Respond publicly, calmly, and with facts. Your real reviews will outweigh one tantrum.
Then fire them kindly. Life's too short to detail cars for people who treat you like the enemy.
Detailing is a booming trade with more demand than hands to meet it. The operators who make it long-term aren't the cheapest â they're the ones with boundaries. Protect your time like the asset it is.
