Detailer Advisor: When the Work Starts Breaking Your Body
Eight months in, business booming â and his body is telling him to quit.
A fellow detailer posted this week after eight months in the trade: demand is strong, the work is coming in, but constant bending has left him with persistent back and knee pain, and he's seriously wondering whether he can keep doing this long-term. The trap: the work is so precise that training someone else to take the load off feels hard, too. If your knees already ache, you know exactly how he feels.
Your body is your main tool â treat it like one:
-
Stop bending at the waist all day. Work from a rolling stool for lower panels and door jambs, kneel on gel knee pads instead of concrete, and use long-handle brushes and an extractor wand so you aren't folded over the car for hours.
-
Split the bending out of your day. Book a hard physical job, then a lighter one â an interior wipe-down or a maintenance wash â instead of stacking two full details back to back. Add a real 15-minute break every 90 minutes: stretch, stand straight, drink water. Working through pain doesn't make you tougher; it makes the next injury more expensive.
-
Train a helper for one repeatable chunk, not the whole craft. Give them wheels, jambs, and vacuuming, with a photo standard for "done" and a checklist they follow every time. You keep paint work and final inspection. That takes hours of bending off your week.
-
Price the physical cost into the job. If a full detail takes five hours of bending, it cannot be priced like a two-hour wash. Charge for the time, cap how many full details you take per week, and treat a third full detail as overtime for your body â because it is.
-
Track pain like a business number. If the same motion hurts three days in a row, change the setup that week â different stool, different task order, different tool â and see a physio before it becomes a decision to quit. Most detailers don't leave because they hate the work; they leave because they never fixed the way they do it.
Demand for good detailing isn't going anywhere. Protect the person doing the work, and the business lasts as long as the demand does.
